Effects of Paternal Age on Semen Quality and Status of Fertility at a Tertiary Care Hospital, West Bengal, India: A Cross-sectional Study

Introduction: Modern couples are inclined to postpone conception as a result of societal pressures and expectations during the last several decades. The impact age on spermatogenesis in men is not much studied. While there no known limits at which can father children, implications Advanced Paternal Age (APA) poorly understood. Aim: To assess relationship between advancing aberrant sperm parameters male partners sub fertile West Bengal, India. Materials Methods: This cross-sectional hospital-based study was carried out Department Physiology, R.G. Kar Medical College Hospital, India, from February 2020 January 2021. A total 56 subjects couples, who have been screened subfertile, group 21-40 years were enrolled study. Semen analysis done by light microscopy using Makler counting chamber after three days abstinence according World Health Organisation (WHO) 5th edition 2010 guidelines. data evaluated with use an Microsoft Excel sheet Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 20.0 employing Chi-square test. Results: In present study, population consisted subfertile mean 29.68±5.87 years. Thirty one (55.4%) had abnormal semen parameters. Most common abnormality detected asthenozoospermia (n=10, 17.9%) followed oligoasthenozoospermia (n=9, 16.1%) oligozoospermia (n=6, 10.7%).
